Overcome your ego

Having an ego is to exaggerate one’s importance. Many individuals could be successful by being egotistic, masking as a sign of confidence but most times, there are many side effects that lead to serious social issues and failure.

Your ego can be like a petulant child inside you that has to get his or her way over everything and everyone else. It may manifest as a need to be seen as better than others, to be recognised for any achievement, to be superior and certain about that superiority. There are many reasons why ego is the enemy of many people.

Why Ego is the Enemy

  • Ego prevents you from being friendly

Having an ego causes arrogance and self-centredness. It is difficult for someone who is arrogant and selfish to make friends because these behaviours tend to cause envy and hate, making it hard to make friends. It takes away the fun in conversations and makes discussions seem like a competition to see who knows the most.

  • Ego causes you to overestimate your capacity

A big ego prevents you from accepting that you can learn from others. It makes you believe that you are omnipotent and therefore not needing help from anyone. Having an ego causes complacency because of the false sense of security and superiority.

  • Ego causes bad decision making

One flaw of people with egos is that they need to be acknowledged and accepted. This means that egotistic people are likely to make decisions that aim for fame and not improvement. Ego also makes it difficult to ask for advice when making critical career moves due to arrogance.

How to Prevent Ego from Ruining Your Life

Keeping ego at bay isn’t easy and it starts with awareness. Once you know you have a problem, you can then begin to find proven ways to begin fighting the enemy that is ego. Here are some ways to help you become a better person.

  • Stop giving yourself grand narratives

This is most applicable to when you achieve something and then proceed to tell yourself that success is normal and expected. This makes you become overconfident and haughty. Always ensure that you focus on the actual event and its significance, not the narrative.

  • Learn to manage yourself and other social relationships

Working as part of an organization is a chance to learn how to manage situations and compromise with others. You also learn how to help others grow and set aside your own personal agenda for the greater good.

  • Forget fame and recognition

Learn to do your work without looking for glory. Remember to give credit to your team and all those who did the grunt work for you to look good. It is also essential to understand that it is teamwork that makes the dream work. Real success comes from giving up short-term fame for long term benefits and achievements. Learn from those who have succeeded in your chosen career path and listen to their counsel as it will be useful when you need it the most.
